The Qthena Chat Skill: Digital Patent Assistant – EPO Focused (replacing the previous Chat Skill: "Multi-Document Analysis - EPO examination focused") helps you manage substantive European Patent Office (EPO) workflows directly in Chat Mode. It is designed to support you in drafting arguments, responding to examiner communications, preparing oppositions or appeals and much more in line with EPO practice.
It is also the ideal Qthena Skill to handle other patent jurisdictions (JP, KR, DE, etc.) for which there currently is not dedicated Qthena Skill yet.
What You Can Do with This Skill
- Draft Legal Arguments
Create structured arguments aligned with EPO standards to streamline your office action replies or submissions. - Respond to Examiner Objections
Develop clear, reasoned replies based on substantive EPO law and examination guidelines. - Oppositions & Appeals
Organize reasoning, compare prior art, and prepare draft submissions for opposition or appeal proceedings. - Start Without a Document
You can begin an exploratory or brainstorming session without uploading any documents — simply click Save to start chatting with Qthena. - Brainstorm Your Drafts
You can upload your opposition draft, patent application or other draft legal arguments, and stress test them with Qthena before submitting or sharing these. Simply instruct Qthena to act like "an experienced Opposition Division Chairperson" or "a tough opponent" and ask Qthena to take the role of the counter-part.
Notes and Limitations
- This Skill is focused on substantive EPO workflows. It does not cover formalities such as filing forms, renewals, or fee payments.
- It does not perform standalone patent or case law searches. Any suggested references should be verified against official EPO sources.
- Qthena provides structured draft outputs — human review and validation remain essential before use in official proceedings.
How to Use
- Open the AskQthena panel and go to the Chat tab.
- Click Create New Session.
- Select Digital Patent Assistant – EPO Focused from the Skill menu.
- Add documents from your Context list if relevant, or simply click Save to start without documents.
- Begin your discussion or analysis directly in the chat.

You can also launch this Skill directly from the AskQthena landing page. When selecting options such as “Office Action Review (unpublished patent application)” or “Patent Office Action Review (any jurisdiction)”, Qthena automatically creates a blank project with the EPO Focused skill preselected — so you can start chatting right away.
Example Use Cases
- Drafting a reply to an EPO office action.
- Exploring argument strategies for inventive step or added subject matter.
- Preparing draft submissions for an opposition case.
- Brainstorming potential approaches to strengthen a European patent application or your Draft Opposition Grounds and much more.
Legal Framework Overview
The EPO Focused skill applies the principles of the European Patent Convention (EPC) and integrates reasoning from key Boards of Appeal decisions and the key aspects of the EPO Guidelines for Examination. It is designed to apply, not cite, these frameworks in practical drafting and analysis.
